Releasing his first self-produced singles in 2019, 16 year old Dharawal singer/songwriter Aodhan (Aidan Whitehall) won JJJ’s Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative with his coastal folk flavoured ‘”When Your Eyes Speak”. Following up with single “Drive” which gained national rotation, in 2020 Aodhan featured on Bigsound and was nominated as an Unearthed High finalist for “Twelve Again”. Aodhan now returns with release of his new single “I’m Closed”, as premiered on Triple J’s Good Nights.
“I’m Closed is a song about withdrawal and that feeling of needing to isolate yourself from others while you’re feeling low in order to keep others happy. Though, the way I’ve written this song sounds like it could be directed at a significant other, it’s really aimed at anyone I love like friends and family” – AODHAN
Recorded with Ryan Miller (Angus and Julia Stone, Peking Duk, Thelma Plum) at Hercules St Studios in Sydney, Aodhan explains “I began writing this song at home, about 2 years ago now. At the time, I was a bit down in the dumps and I just wanted to express it a little. The song ended up travelling through a couple of other logic sessions as I experimented with it for a bit.” Aodhan recorded almost all the instruments with help from Miller on keys. “After a bit of playing around, I came to the final idea of incorporating a bit more of an apparent rock sound which is quite new to the project”.
Taking influence from a huge range of writers, genres, and eras in music Aodhan fuses heartfelt writing with soulful musicality. Since releasing his first single, Aodhan has broadened his tastes a little more and has begun to experiment with his music, finding his feet at the door of a dreamy indie rock/pop sound without loosing those elements and senses of the acoustic indie folk. He has also had the chance to work with one of his favourite musical legends, Josh Pyke, which led to the creation of Aodhan’s energetic, pop infused single “Drive”.
